Happy arbitrarily assigned Gregorian New Years, fellow diggers!
How would you describe your 2024?
Was it spent taking action, initiating and starting what is new? Perhaps it was more about being in place, moving existing endeavours forward and achieving results. Or maybe it was all about change, movement and adaptability: feeling somewhat like you are in two places at once?
These are the three fundamental “Modalities” of life encapsulated in the 12 Tropical Zodiac Signs, which are assigned respectively as either Cardinal, Fixed or Mutable (or Dual/Double-Bodied, in traditional parlance). Each of the 4 Signs in each Modality can then be further divided up by the 4 Elements: Fire (Spirit), Earth (Senses), Air (Intellect) and Water (Emotion). If we then add the basic characteristics of the Ruling Planet, we essentially understand everything we need to about each Sign.
If there was a Modality that described 2024 for me, it was definitely Mutable: giving up a fixed address, shifting from home to home, tying up various loose ends to transition to a career compatible with a transient lifestyle. A few weeks ago things became somewhat less Mutable when I hit an Emu on the Forest-heavy Highways of South Western Australia — the Emu came off best, in case you were concerned, and as a result I now lack the basic item necessary for a transient lifestyle.
Luckily, I am a Triple (Sun, Venus and Mars) Leo (Fixed Fire): so I don’t mind being stuck in place as long as I have something to inspire, motivate and energise me (and allow me to show off a bit). Which meant putting the last of my dwindling savings into my own drum kit.
Then it came to the question of what my first cover would be: one that was straightforward enough for me to learn before New Year’s Day. Well… what about the most famous song about New Year’s Day, literary called New Year’s Day!
But how to tie it to the Astrology? Well, let’s look at the chart of the insufferably smug lead singer of U2.
Bono — aka the Smug Globalist Prick — has 4 of his 5 personal Planets in Fixed Signs. With the Sun, Mercury and Venus in the Fixed Earth of Taurus, the need is for what shelters and secures us, what feels good, what grounds us; with Venus there as the Ruler, all these things become particularly important in relationships.
Opposite Venus in the Fixed Water of Scorpio is the Moon. The Fixidity of Scorpio is a bit different, and (like water) is a bit harder to grasp: we want what reflects us in the deepest way possible, we want to get to the bottom of how we feel, and why we feel. The Moon is already all about emotion, and so can end up feeling particularly fixated when it finds something that provides this depth and intensity.
With this Astrology mind, let’s try these lyrics out as an intensely fixated Scorpio Moon, in polarity with a Taurus Venus seeking comfort and security:
Nothing Changes On New Years Day
I Want To Be With (Be With You) You Night and Day
I Will Be With You Again
We might extrapolate from these lyrics that the Prick isn’t a big fan of change, including but not limited to New Year’s Day itself… in which case, well, I’m quite delighted to give him the bad news — 2025 might not be your year, champ!
Yes, it might seem a tad click-baity to claim that everything changes literally on New Year’s Day, but let’s have a look at the chart for mid-morning Moonchild Standard Time and see what we can find.
Look at that spicy approaching Opposition (exact in roughly 36 hours time) between the Planet of Action Mars and the Planet of Transformation Pluto — and being brought to unavoidable attention by the ever provocative Luna! Exactly what more of an invitation to initiate your own life changes were you asking for?
Regardless of whether anything of significance does change on or around New Year’s Day, virtually the entire Astrological community (even the Love’n’Lighters) agree that 2025 is a uniquely transitional year. Try this on for size:
Neptune will complete its 165ish year cycle of the Tropical Zodiac when it crosses from the 12th Sign of Pisces to the 1st Sign of Aries: the Planet of Dissolution essentially now dissolving and releasing all the Archetypal experiences it has accumulated over that journey.
Somewhat menacingly, yet also mysteriously, Saturn has also timed the end of its 29ish year cycle in almost perfect alignment — this ambiguous combination will dance awkwardly yet tantalisingly together, back and forth between the Fish and the Ram, until they leave the waters for good in early 2026.
In what feels like something like an underwater car-crash in super-slow-motion: the Head of the Celestial Dragon — aka the North Lunar Node Rahu — slips across this same start/end point but in the opposite direction! Together, we have separate 165ish, 29ish and 17ish year cycles (the latter being for the Lunar Node Axis) aligning in the same year across the Zero Point of the Tropical Cycle.
Even Uranus get in on the action, dipping those juicy sweet cheeks into its new Sign of Gemini for the first time in the second half of the year, where it will replace the Benefic presence of Jupiter, who will have recently moved into Cancer to clean up the mess that Mars Retrograde is about to make.
This means that every Outer Planet aside from Pluto will be changing Tropical Signs in 2025, with Pluto more than making up for that with its Opposition to Mars NOT EVEN 48 HOURS after the NYE fireworks have finished needlessly destroying wildlife and traumatising pets.
IS THAT NOT ENOUGH TO JUSTIFY A WOMBAT’S WITTY CLICKBAITING, FELLOW DIGGERS?
Anyway, long story short, I am wholesomely here for it — for no other reason than I can’t fucking go anywhere atm anyway — and while there will be much digging to come into each of these Celestial shifts, for now you can enjoy a guided tour through these transits to the soundtrack of the Emotionally Fixated Musings of the Smug Globalist Prick.
Enjoy!
A collision with an emu - I wonder was he/she trying to get your attention?
"The emu, as a spiritual symbol, often embodies strength, endurance, and a connection to the earth. People who resonate with the emu spirit animal are typically strong-willed, resilient, and grounded individuals who find strength in difficult circumstances. The emu’s presence in spirituality often emphasizes the importance of staying focused on life’s journey, regardless of obstacles."
IDK. But I like that and it seems to fit with what I know of you.
"Well, let’s look at the chart of the insufferably smug lead singer of U2." That made me smile.
Thanks, Isaac. Always appreciate your larger perspective.
Great post!
